Biology Term Paper!! Help, my head's spinning with possibilities :) [Jan. 29th, 2006|05:24 pm]
Amanda
Seriously! I couldn't be more excited about this, so please humor me.
We get to pick ANY topic having to do with biology (or any field therein) and research it extensively. It's not due till April 28, but since I'm a dork I'm trying to decide on a topic now because it's really exciting.
Naturally, of course, I have SEVERAL ideas already and can't choose between them:

-Social patterns of African Elephants
-Infrasound Communication of African Elephants
-Velvet Worms
-Camouflage/defense mechanisms in tropical insects
-Bats & their role in the ecosystems
-An unusual species (platypus, pangolin, etc)

I'd have a lot different topic choices if it was persuasive, but as it's just informational, any of these will do nicely. Do you have any thoughts on these, or know of others I may enjoy?

Creepy, man! Though strangely enough, ninjas are related to biology in their own way...

The only one of those that I haven't heard of before is the infrasound communication of African elephants. Hmm.

You could choose something that has to do with whales, too.

That's because it's a brand-new finding--just became known a few years ago. But, it's REALLY neat stuff. They're now finding that elephants can communicate with others miles away with their infrasonic rumbles, and that a variety of different frequencies match up with different situations. In short, they have a language. A very complex language, at that :P We just didn't know about it because the sounds are too low to detect without specialized equipment.
And thanks, whales are no end of interesting things :)

You could try animals in space...or look up Ivan Ivanovich. I think you should go with something about elephants or birds of prey. Try to pick something very specific. Very, very specific. If it's too specific, you can always expand it as you wright it.

Animals in space? lmao.
And yes, I completely completely agree. These were just the broad beginnings of inner brainstorming.

This is glitter_dragon's hubby. I am full of opinions so i thought I would give mine on this.

If I were to choose from your list I would says bats (bats are neat :D)

If I were to suggest a topic then I would pick the human animal and study it from a biosocial standpoint so as to understand the reclamation of the primitive man. Would probably look a bit at the modern primative movement as it relates to this reclamation of our own bestial natures.

The elephants sound a bit neat but keep reminding me of the Primus song Southbound Pachyderm.

Ah yes, that would be interesting! More of an anthropological take on biology would indeed be cool.
But yeah, I wound up going along with the infrasound communication of elephants. There's tons of interesting new things to find out with that one.
