Valentine's Day. (this really transformed into a rant--sorry!) [Feb. 13th, 2006|08:12 pm]
Amanda
I don't like Valentine's Day, for many of the same reasons I dislike Christmas. It's a great idea to be with those you love and show you appreciate them and such, but once again this idea has been pounced on by every single corporation in the world and is now being shoved down everyone's throats. In addition, it pretty much sucks for everyone who isn't taken. This whole day makes them feel like there's something horribly wrong with them, when really it's nothing of the sort.
And the rivalry I've been witnessing building up all over campus as to who will buy their sweetie what, and how much it's gonna cost, and how they're gonna make this person feel more loved with all the chocolates than anyone else possibly can.

On one hand, this is incredibly sweet. On the other, it makes me wonder why people feel they need a holiday and a pocketbook and frickin' material things in order to make someone else feel loved. It's a mark of a severe downward societal spiral that I suspect will only continue to get worse. If money can be made, who cares what else suffers, right? (Because after all, the poor aren't capable of being loved, right? They don't even have the new Maytag dishwasher--what on earth is wrong with them? How could they ever be happy?)
All in all, I'm kinda glad I'll be working tomorrow and not having to fend for myself on campus. I'm happy for all those who love this holiday and take the opportunity to show they care, but besides that...gahh, I frickin' hate Valentine's Day.
What are your views on it?

Anyway, if you enjoy it, I really hope you have a great one! This is only my opinion, and it is by no means the only one worth having. *hugs*

I don't mind the Finnish way of spending Valentine's day, because here, the main point is telling your best friends you love them (and giving them little gifts, yes - thought I'll mostly be just sending text messages around). I know a bunch of people who are hoping that it won't turn dating-oriented in USA's style because that would make so many people feel like they're missing out.

Meh...i dont buy into the whole "EVERYTHING IS TOO MATERIALISTIC!!" stuff...Who cares if its a ring or chocolates or a CD or a DVD or something that makes someone happy...The point is you made them happy

I used to not care either way about valentine's day - I have always wanted to be single, so not having anyone give me chocolates was fine with me. However, lately, I've been thinking about it - Valentine's day is a day for lovers, but it is primarily a day about love. So, this valentine's day I give my mother a card, telling her I love her, I say happy valentine's day to everyone I meet and most importantly, I make myself feel loved by doing the things which I want today. So I like the idea of a holiday entirely about love - it's all in the way you look at it.

Good point--so, it's just up to you to take a different turn on it if you don't like the classical one.

Who cares if the corportations are involved. They can't force you to celebrate or buy a damn thing. I still enjoy it if I'm in a relationship, which I am so it's all good.

Well, yeah...it's very good you don't. But, so many people do. And then get they angry and expect material things from their SO's, to take the place of immaterial feelings. It just makes me a bit sad about the fate of humanity as a whole.

I hate Valentines Day...why do you need a special day to show someone you love them?

Exactly! Why do you have to feel obligated to just because everyone else is and the day says you should?
