This is why I love Biology. [Oct. 30th, 2006|05:41 pm]

Last week my GOP lab went out to the woods by the dorms and collected fungi samples to bring back to the lab and examine under the microscopes. It was the BEST lab ever...until it got even better! We'd apparently brought along guests amongst the samples: a pillbug and a millipede. "What an amazing opportunity!!", I thought. My group seemed to agree, so before setting them free we put them into a Petri dish and looked at them with the microscope.

Lo and behold: WOW! They're so amazing!! The pillbug had intricate armourous plates all along its back and gorgeous colorful designs amongst the grey. As it walked, the plates moved with it in a rippling pattern. I never would have guessed. And the millipede--cool! I was able to see its eyes, and its antennae, and its numerous legs and body segments, all moving at once...its head looks very much like a caterpillar's. Same eyes. And the way the two of them interacted...way cool! They're part of a mini-ecosystem indeed.

I feel like a whole new realm's been opened up to me...like I have a special VIP pass to the hidden layers of this world. Without a microscope I'd never be able to see what insects actually look like, because what we see of them with our huge eyes is only the tip of the iceberg. The same with all I'm learning about plants: it's a great gift to be able to look at a tree and know what's happening inside it, and how it got to be there in the first place. I passed these things by for so much of my life and only saw what was in front of me: now, for the first time, I feel like all three dimensions are gaining focus.
